As soon as residency is transferred to Switzerland or the Liechtenstein Principality, obtaining a Swiss licence in the corresponding category is mandatory.
Residence in Switzerland or Liechtenstein with a foreign licence
Holders of a hang gliding licence not issued in Switzerland can apply for simplified admission to the Swiss pilot's licence depending on their country of origin. Applications must always be made in writing, including all supporting documents. The following simplified admissions exist:
- Solo pilot IPPI 4
- Register with the Swiss Hanggliding Association and send an application by e-mail to info@shv-fsvl.ch with a scan or photos of your licence and IPPI card.
- The Swiss Hanggliding Association checks the documents and issues a letter for simplified examination approval, which must be brought along for the practical part of the examination.
- Complete the theoretical pilot examination (CHF 125.-).
- Pre-flight at a flight school to classify your skills/number of altitude flights to be completed (without experience regularly 50) The flight school decides on the number of altitude flights required to confirm readiness for the examination on the training check sheet. The solo flight (proof in the flight logbook) is mandatory.
- Registration for the practical pilot examination via the Swiss Hanggliding Association website (CHF 125.-) and submission of the "simplified authorisation" letter to the examination expert.
- Solo pilot IPPI 5
German or Austrian pilots with cross-country authorisation / B licence are also entitled to this simplified licence without an IPPI card.
- Register with the Swiss Hanggliding Association and send your application to info@shv-fsvl.ch with a scan or photos of your brevet/licence and IPPI card.
- The Swiss Hanggliding Association checks the documents and issue a letter for simplified examination authorisation, which must be brought to the exam.
- The pilot registers for a pilot theory test via the website (only legislation part, price selection 1-2 subjects, simplified admission) and hands over the letter for simplified admission to the examination expert.
- Once the theory test has been passed and the aforementioned authorisation letter has been submitted to the examination expert, the pilot is issued with the Swiss Pilot Solo licence.
- Tandem IPPI 6
- Register with the Swiss Hanggliding Association and send your application to info(at)shv-fsvl.ch with a scan or photos of your certificate/licence, IPPI card, logbook and letter of recommendation (if available).
- The Swiss Hanggliding Association checks the documents and issue a letter for simplified examination authorisation.
A distinction is made between two cases for the simplified obtaining of the Swiss biplace / tandem licence:
Biplace / tandem pilot with little experience:
The Biplace 1 level is omitted. The entire Biplace 3 training (including the Biplace 1 solo flight test) must be completed in accordance with the directives.Biplace / tandem pilot with a lot of experience:
The Biplace 1 level is cancelled. The following partial examinations must be passed in the order stated:- Theory exam Biplace 3 (incl. passenger assistance subject)
- Practical exam Biplace 1 Solo
- Practical exam Biplace 3 two-seater flights
- Flight instructor
A simplified admission to the flight instructor licence or flight instructor trainee licence is decided on a stand-alone basis. If you have existing qualifications, please send the application with all supporting documents by e-mail to info(at)shv-fsvl.ch.
- Speedflying
Foreign speedflying pilots always require the Swiss speedflying licence addition.
As there are still no standardised international regulations for speedflying (such as the IPPI level for delta and paragliding), this licence replenishment is mandatory for all pilots. This applies regardless of whether they are resident in Switzerland or not.
The basis for the speedflying addition is a paragliding licence with IPPI level 4 or 5.
Detailed information on regular training, exams and directives can be found here.
APPI - Association of Paragliding Pilots and Instructors
An APPI licence is not officially recognised in Switzerland and does not entitle the holder to fly in Switzerland.
In some countries, APPI is the official training system, but it is not recognised in Switzerland and there are no agreements in this regard.
